EXPLORA II Ship Highlights
The role of a ship’s Godmother holds deep significance in maritime tradition, symbolising good luck and protection for the vessel and its crew. For EXPLORA II, the newest addition to the Explora Journeys fleet, the choice was clear: Rosalba Giugni, a pioneering environmentalist and founder of Marevivo.
Giugni’s selection reflects Explora Journeys’ commitment to ocean conservation and sustainability. For over 40 years, she has dedicated her life to protecting the Mediterranean Sea and its ecosystems. As founder of Marevivo, Italy’s leading marine conservation non-profit, she has also been instrumental in advocating for legislative changes to protect vital marine habitats and fight against harmful practices like drift netting. Her work also focusses on fostering a deeper connection between people and the ocean, inspiring future generations of environmental stewards.
The partnership between Explora Journeys and Giugni is built on a shared vision for marine conservation. For nearly a decade, Marevivo has collaborated with MSC Group, Explora Journeys’ parent company, to promote ocean protection in the Mediterranean, with support from the MSC Foundation. This partnership underscores a mutual commitment to sustainability and ecological transition within the cruise industry.
As Godmother of EXPLORA II, Giugni blessed the ship in a traditional ceremony, cutting a ribbon to release a champagne bottle against the bow, wishing the ship and its journeys good fortune. This momentous occasion was attended by distinguished guests and dignitaries.
EXPLORA II, with its innovative design, embodies the values Giugni has championed throughout her career. As a trailblazer in marine conservation and an inspiration to women and young people worldwide, she is the perfect symbol of strength, leadership, and dedication. Her role as Godmother honours her extraordinary contributions to the environment and will inspire generations to come.
